Clear and calm, the Channel doth yield.

2021 12-19 SB Channel

Captain Devin reports clear, sunny skies with no wind and calm seas. Sightings included: 1 humpback whale, 300 California sea lions, 2000 long-beaked common dolphins and 1000 short-beaked common dolphins.

After a run across The Channel to The Lanes, we finally intercepted a small pod of about 20 long-beaked common dolphins and got some great interactions/looks.

Moving east, it was not long before a highly-acrobatic hers of short-beaked common dolphins located the Condor Express. We a lot of robust jumping as well as some instanced of tail-walking (no, Sea World didn’t invent this). This group was also fun to watch due to the large number of calves in the mix.

Continuing to a point just north of Prisoner’s Harbor on Santa Cruz Island, a single humpback whale was encountered. It was a small animal and appeared to be following behind a group of about 1500 long-beaks. This area was also flush with sea lions and gangs of 20-50 were watched.

On the way home, additional long-beaks were found and after watching for a short while the group took off on a high speed “stampede” run. We followed behind for about 10 minutes and finally broke off to continue our pathway back to the harbor.
