Coastal whales and dolphins provide great looks.

2022 02-19 SB Coast

The day started out sunny with calm, glassy seas on the 9 am trip. By the time the 12 pm trip left the harbor, things were still sunny but the seas and wind were on the rise. The 3 pm excursion experienced moderately rough conditions. Nonetheless, the sightings were good: 4 gray whales and 75 long-beaked common dolphins were closely watched.

The dolphins were found on the morning adventure and were, like most everything we saw today, about 3 miles offshore. The dolphins were off Leadbetter Beach.

Although seen on different trips today, all of the whales were in the vicinity of UCSB. Three were adults and one was a smaller sub-adult whale. The looks were good for all.
