Condor Express got MUGGED big time in the Humpback ‘hood
Clear blue water. Light breeze. Calm seas. Great conditions for spouts. Captain Eric ran back to the Santa Cruz Island hotspot today and found similar humpback #whale masses as reported the past few days. 12 humpback whales were closely watched with many more spouts seen in the distance near the Island and mid-Channel too. Okay, now the good stuff. Right off the bat 7 humpbacks (including our pal Shorty) mugged the Condor Express and forced Captain Eric to hold the boat in a stationary position for about 40 minutes. These whales were all around the boat on all sides and underneath us too. If that was not enough, one of the bigger humpbacks did a “head stand” right off the bow and the span of its tail flukes almost dwarfed the width of the Condor Express bow. Needless to say, the humpback fan club on the boat had a wild session. Around the area 250 or so long beaked common dolphins meandered past the fully stopped Condor. Then, as icing on the cetacean cake, a giant blue whale surfaced out of no where right next to us and then slowly passed under so everyone could see the magnificent bright blue glow of its body in the clear water. It was enough to make a serious whale watcher cry…in a good way.
