Dense fog spots added excitement to our looks at humpbacks, dolphins and a Minke whale.

Captain Dave and the crew ran across the entire Channel and ended up inside the world famous Painted Cave for a quick tour. On the way to and from The Cave, there was a light wind and swell. The visibility was another matter. It went from high overcast to dense fog to more high overcast. Luckily the fog had a few little sun holes (which are known as “sucker holes“ in Alaska). Sightings for the trip included: 1 Minke whale, 6 humpback whales and 1000 common dolphins.

We followed a Minke whale through a couple of breathing cycles just 4 miles south of The Harbor. Continuing southwest, when we were southwest of The Buoy, we encountered a very productive area. There were a total of 4 humpback whales here. A pair plus 2 singles. In addition, two large herds of common dolphins came through. The first was the largest and went into stampede mode. So amazing to see!

Later, after the Cave tour, we were 7 miles north of The Island and had a quick look at a single humpback whale. Then again, on the way home, about 6 miles out, we had quick looks at another.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
