2022 07-15 SB Channel
Captain Dave and his crew explored two different micro-climates as they transected the entire Santa Barbara Channel in search of wildlife. The northern waters, near the Santa Barbara coast, was quite nice. However, once we passed the NOAA East Channel Buoy and moved into The Lanes, the seas got a bit steep and the breeze whipped up the whitecaps. Nonetheless, sightings were good: 3500 long-beaked common dolphins and 1 Minke whale.
Dolphins were found on both sides of the Channel and most of the herds were scattered and contained several hundred individuals. Most were boat-friendly and we had great looks.
Near Santa Cruz Island, despite the sea conditions, we had good looks at a Minke whale.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
