Sunny skies, calm seas, and a light breeze set the stage for a near perfect cetacean day. A single 2 1/2 hour trip left the docks at 12 N.  Total sightings included: 8  humpback whales and 300 common dolphins. The crew also removed a single, deflated, floating, mylar balloon from the ocean surface. The humpback whale hotspot moved a little bit E and was located about 8 miles S of Hendry’s Beach.

After picking up the balloon, we moved onward to the hotspot. There were 3 pairs of adult humpback whales plus 2 more individuals in the area. The first pair was exceedingly cooperative and had very short downtimes. Everyone had great looks. The remaining 2 pairs were a little more lethargic, and seemed to be spending some time logging before taking a longer dive. While logging, a 2 of them drifted very close to the Condor Express.

Also in the area we spent quality time with at least 300 friendly common dolphins. When we ran out of time, Captain Dave and the crew put the Condor Express into gear and ran a tight circle. This created a nice wave for the dolphins to surf. (see example in today’s photograph).

You never know what mother nature has in store.
