Images: instead of balloons, today we found one wheel with a tire and what was once a nice blanket, at the same spot. (Video footage above, and photo, courtesy of our own Kelly Kohls).
2025 12–14 SB Channel
Captain Eddie reported a low stratus layer that kept things gray and cool all day. The ocean surface was mill pond glass until late in the trip. Sightings: 200 California sea lions, 7 Dall’s porpoise, and 1 humpback whale.
We moved offshore a few miles then headed W through the glassy water. There were numerous rafts of California sea lions around all day. We got into some nice action when we were a few miles west of platform Holly. A part of 5 Dall’s porpoise came by and charged the boat once so everybody had great looks of these little black and white torpedoes.
Nearby, our deckhand Isabel carefully removed 2 items of interest from the ocean surface, as shown in Kelly’s videos above: 1 spare tire including the wheel, and 1 large tan blanket.
Soon thereafter, we located a single juvenile humpback whale traveling E in a zigzag pattern, but then reversed itself and headed back W. Again, great looks were had by all.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
