Great fall season whale watching

2017 11-10 SB Channel

It was a cool and clear day in the Santa Barbara Channel which made for spectacular wildlife watching and amazing vistas.  Captain Erik and his crew report seeing 9 humpback whales and at least 3000 long-beaked common dolphins.  It was great fall season whale watching for sure.

The action began just south of our local Carpinteria oil rig line where an enormous, long line of dolphins located the Condor Express, similar to what was reported on our last trip.  Humpback whales were here, too, and seemed to be moving towards the southeast and Anacapa Island along with the dolphins.

On the trip home we passed through the area with the same whales.  Now the humpbacks were surrounded by dolphins, seabird masses, and numerous California sea lions because they were actively feeding on the surface.  Surface lunge-feeding was going on all around the boat, and was fantastic to see.
