Santa Barbara resident and world-famous ocean explorer/environmentalist, Jean-Michel Cousteau was on board to celebrate his birthday today. Seas were bumpy from strong winds to the northwest, but winds did not fill-in during our coastal trip. Skies were sunny all day. It was the opening of our regular 10a to 230p trip season, and sightings included: 1500 common dolphins and 4 humpback whales.

After leaving the outer harbor entrance buoy which was crammed with California sea lions, and at least 60 more were waiting in the surrounding water for a spot to open, just 3 miles out we encountered a mega pod of common dolphins. They were spread out over 2 miles of water and created 30 minutes of non-stop dolphin watching fun.

Just six miles offshore we watched 3 humpback whales. It was a mother, her calf and a probable escort. These whales immediately became friendly with the Condor Express, especially the little calf. Trips to and from the boat included passing under the bow and some active people-watching.

Captain Dave and the crew proceeded south to the wind line which was near The Lanes. Here we found another single whale. It was a large adult.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
