Explorations centered around a hotspot in the far E channel, between platform Gina and platform Gail, about 24 miles from Santa Barbara Harbor. Skies were clear and sunny all day, and there was no swell. There was a refreshing light breeze throughout the trip. Totals for the day: 2000 common dolphins, 1 fin whale, and 50 California sea lions.
There were plenty of dolphins scattered across the hotspot. They appeared to be feeding sub-surface and generally moving towards the E. A single, large, adult fin whale was seen feeding in the area. (See today’s photo for an example). It had short, 4 minute dives, and it was fun to watch. Like the dolphins, it was moving E. California sea lions were also present here.
On the way home, we went through a pod of another 200 dolphins.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
