Dave and the crew ran two trips today. The morning trip left at 9 o’clock and experienced quite a bit of rain. The noon trip found mostly sunny, blue skies with only a few patches of clouds. There wasn’t much wind, and seas were relatively calm for both trips. Once again, sightings were great. Totals for the day: 10 humpback whales and 600 common dolphins.
We spent most of our morning trip watching a group of at least four whales actively feeding on pop-up birdnados. There was a pair an two singles. Throughout the day we saw all sizes of northern anchovy schools near the surface, hence the many birdnados. When we settled-in with the whales and were getting great looks, a nice pod of common dolphins joined in and began to help lead the humpbacks to the hotspots. Thhe whales made several close approaches.
The noon trip moved further south and we found an active hotspot with plenty of birdnados, dolphins and at least 6 whales. There were a few instances of sideways surface lunging, but predominantly we saw vertical lunges. The whales lunged alone, in pairs, trios, quads, and even fives. (See today’s photograph for an example).
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
