Hazy sun, calm seas and a light breeze made for a great way to “beat the heat” with some great wildlife sightings too. Closely watched species: 10 offshore bottlenose dolphins and 6+ humpback whales.
In the southbound lanes, near the site of yesterdays encounters, Captain Devin and the headed for a distant breach and found 6 humpback whales with as many as 10 total in the area if you count the others that we did not get close to. The whales were in pairs, and the first of them did some cool pectoral fin slaps. Great looks were had by all.
Devin then took everyone on a short tour of the beautiful sea cliffs, rocky outcrops and caves along the northern face of Santa Cruz Island as we searched for dolphins. Near Arch Rock we located a small pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins. This was a particularly great sighting since we were so close to the island.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
