It’s hard to imagine a better 2 1/2 hour trip.

Image: a close-up look at the power of a humpback tail throw as shown by an intense splash pattern. (I’m a big fan of ocean abstracts).

Conditions were moderately warm and sunny with calm seas. A light but comfortable breeze picked up late in the trip. One 9 AM adventure left the docks. Sightings were phenomenal: 2 humpback whales and 2 gray whales. All of the action was just N of the lanes and directly S of the Harbor.

We were attracted to the action by a single spout which turned out to be the first of 2 juvenile humpback whales. As we approached, they became very active. Lots of tail throws, tail lobs, pec-slapping, rolling and trumpet vocalization were included in their repertoire. (See today’s photo to get the feel of the power involved with a tail throw).

As if all this action was not enough, the pair then proceeded to MUG the Condor Express. They worked both sides of the boat, swam under the bow, and basically blew everybody’s mind.

On the way home, about 7 miles from home, we drove slowly past 2 single adult gray whales that were working their way back to the Bering Sea. Great looks were had.

You never know what mother nature has in store.
