The Condor Express ran a large circular path from the harbor to the northbound shipping lanes, to Platform Holly, then along the coast to home. The rich hot spots from earlier this week were a bit windy and rough today…hence the circle. Sightings included 1 humpback whale, 2 Minke whales and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins.
The outbound trip from the harbor to The Lanes was picturesque, but we did not stop for mammals until we were near mid-Channel. Here we first encountered about 600 dolphins spread out along a 1 ½ mile line. We had good looks at these agile little cetaceans and then located a single, adult whale a bit to the west. Although the whale was slowly moving east, it stopped and spent 30 minutes kelping…concentrating on its head and back.
In this same region we also had quick looks at 2 separate Minke whales which were about 2 miles apart.
To find calmer seas, Captain Dave ran northwest to the coast and explored the nearshore waters from Platform Holly to the harbor. Along this path we found two more large pods of dolphins. The 2nd pod was a nursery pod and practically every adult had a calf in tow. Fun to see!
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
