Lots of humpback whales and dolphins on a sunny and calm day!

2021 09-03 SB Channel

Sunny skies and calm seas prevailed in the Channel and the wildlife sightings were great! Closely watched species included 6 humpback whales and 2000 long-beaked common dolphins. BE SURE TO READ A SPECIAL BULLETIN AT THE END OF THIS REPORT.

Our first small groups of scattered dolphins, many with 100 or so individuals, found us in The Lanes adjacent to Chinese Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. Sure enough, among the scattered dolphins we also watched three individual humpback whales. All were small, probably juveniles, and showed plenty of tail flukes as they went about their subsurface feeding.

After some quality time with this initial trio of whales and their dolphin cousins, Captain Dave took a short tour along the sea cliffs and coves of northeastern Santa Cruz Island. This included a nice and very scenic visit to Potato Harbor.

On the way home, now a bit further than the location of our earlier whales, a second trio was located. These were adult whales and the largest individual made a wonderful friendly approach including a rolling slo-mo dive under the twin hulls of the Condor Express! Of course, more dolphins were all around this location too.
