Marine mammals galore: humpbacks, dolphins, sea lions.

2021 09-04 SB Channel

Captain Dave and his crew ran across the Channel to The Lanes and back with calm seas. Skies started with fog in the early morning, turning to a high stratus layer, and then, after noon, the sun prevailed. Sightings were phenomenal and included: 10+ humpback whales, 4000 long-beaked common dolphins and 200 California sea lions.

A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE FOUND AT THE END OF TODAY’S WHALE REPORT.

Common dolphins were around all day, starting with smaller pods close to shore and forming big groups on the whale grounds. California sea lions and lots of interesting marine birds were also found among the whales.

The first 2 single, juvenile humpback whales were located 2 miles north of the NOAA East Channel Buoy. One of them breached close to the boat and thrilled its fans.

An even more productive area was found inside The Lanes where concentrations of dolphins, sea lions sea birds and at least 7 whales were found. Among the whales were 1 very large (female) adult and a very active juvenile. The small one did quite a bit of lob tailing, both in a “normal” position and upside down. I’ve tried to emulate this exercise in a swimming pool with little success.

On the way home 2 additional, large adults were found (with hundreds more dolphins).
