2025 09–22 SB Channel
It was another day with ideal sea conditions and excellent sightings in the channel. Although skies were overcast, seas were glassy and calm. Totals for the day: 5 Minke Whales, 1000 common dolphins and 6 humpback whales.
Minke whales were seen both at the beginning, and the very end, of our adventure today. The first one was just a mile out from the harbor. We had two quick looks, and it disappeared. We kept moving SW. (See today’s image).
Soon thereafter, we found ourselves among 1000 or so dolphins in a megapod. They formed a long line running E to W, and were extremely friendly. Everyone had great looks.
Whale sightings began just E of the farm. The first individual had short surface times, then popped up in random locations after long dives. It appeared to be searching or feeding subsurface.
Before long we spotted a single tail fluke in the distance. Unfortunately it disappeared from view and we never saw it again. A little while later, we saw another whale in the distance, and it disappeared the same way as the previous humpback.
We were SW of habitat when we located our fourth whale, which, believe it or not, had short dive times. Nearby there was a very cooperative pair of sub-adult humpbacks. They made several friendly passes and one came especially close as it crossed our bow. During the humpback whale observations, there were two pairs of additional Minke whales. They popped up here and there around the zone. All of this was enhanced by the glassy ocean surface.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
