Mother nature served it up hot and glassy today. Plenty of dolphins and gray whales.

Captain Eddy and the crew ran 2 trips today. Once again we have excellent “summer” conditions with clear skies, glassy seas, and warm air temps. Total sightings for the day included: 4000 common dolphins, 6 gray whales, and 1 blue shark.
In the morning we encountered 5 adult gray whales traveling together up the coast. We had great looks. (see today’s photo for an example). Spouts in the distance turned out to be a spread-out megapod of at least 2000 dolphins. The water clarity really made it easy to track these little beasts underwater. While we were with the dolphins, the crew retrieved a floating, deflated, Mylar balloon from the ocean surface.

We found a small pod of about 15 dolphins south of campus point. Nearby we had very nice looks at a 6 foot blue shark… In the Clearwater! A bit further down the line we saw another mega pod of 2000 dolphins south of Isla Vista. We hugged the coast all the way home and finally, right off the yacht club, we had three quick looks at a northbound gray whale.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
