Risso’s dolphins join the mix

2016 07-14 SB Channel

Captain Dave searched the entire region and ended up with one whopper of an excursion today:  12 humpback whales, 2,500 long-beaked common dolphins, 5 inshore bottlenose dolphins and at least 50 Risso’s dolphins.  Conditions were excellent in all respects.

Humpback and common dolphin assemblages were like stepping stones from the 50-fathom line on out to Santa Cruz Island.  There was one instance of a massive humpback whale breach close to the Condor Express.  Further offshore a large herd of Risso’s dolphins mixed with a handful of offshore bottlenose was located and observed.  Both the Risso’s and the bottlenose had a few calves in the mix.

It was another epic trip with a good variety of cetaceans to observe.  Conditions should continue to be good for a while, so come on out and join the fun.
