Running ahead of the fog for humpback whales and dolphins

2016 12-09 SB Channel

There were calm seas and the Condor Express mostly stayed just a few hundred yards or so ahead of the shifting, sea level fog banks.  Total sightings included 2 humpback whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins.

The humpbacks were located just south of The Lanes.  It was two large, adult whales with fairly short 6-minute down times.  Great looks were had by all.  We watched these beasts until the fog over-took us.  Moving ahead of the fog our next stop was a coastal tour of Santa Cruz Island from about its mid-point eastward to Chinese Harbor.  Just off Chinese the nice herd of dolphins came to the boat and, again, we all had wonderful looks until the fog moved in.

There was fog in the Santa Barbara Channel all the way home until we were within 5 or 6 miles of the harbor.
