After yesterday‘s storm cleared out it left behind clear blue skies today with crisp views of both the island and the mainland. A light wind picked up late in the trip, and the water continues to be very clear. Sightings for the day: 6000 common dolphins and 4 humpback whales.
Six Miles SW of the harbor put us alongside extremely long megapods of dolphins. We enjoyed watching them for a while and then found a single juvenile whale. We had good looks at this animal and it surprised us by throwing its tail several times (See today’s photo for an example).
About 5 miles S there was a single large adult humpback whale with a pair of sub-adults. They appeared to be feeding sub-surface while a large birdnado was taking place above them.
After Dave moved E, there was another large concentration of dolphins that stretched over 1 mile. What a day for dolphins!
Our route back to the harbor took us very close to Platform Charlie. Dave slowed down and talked about drilling operations as well as the oil and gas production that takes place in the channel.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
