2025 07–25 SB Channel
Captain Dave and the crew ran halfway across the channel with good observations aplenty. Skies were sunny and clear all day. The ocean surface was calm. It got a bit windy offshore after 12:30pm, but died down as we came back home and were closer to shore. Sightings for the day included: 5500 common dolphins and 7+ humpback whales.
As has been the case for a week, we found our first pod of common dolphins near the farm, and the rest of the day was filled with them. There were pods of 500 here, 1000 there everywhere we went. Most of the dolphins were traveling, perhaps searching for food.
The humpbacks also exhibited similarities to the previous week’s sightings. We encountered single animals, about a mile or a mile and a half apart, and all were in slow transit mode…perhaps searching for food alongside the dolphins. A few good tail flukes were seen. The very first whale we watched threw its tail once and got everybody’s attention. (See today’s image for an example). One of the last whales of the day made a couple close passes because it happened to surface next to the Condor Express at random.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
