Skies were sunny all day. A trace of wind turned into a light breeze late in the trip. Seas were calm. Captain Eddy and the crew worked a region between the old kelp farm area (reminder the farm is gone now) and the edge of the lanes. All this was S of Santa Barbara. Totals for the day: 1500 common dolphins and 3 humpback whales.

4 miles S of the harbor we encountered one single small humpback. It was milling about and swimming a zigzag pattern. We had some good looks before continuing S.

W of platform habitat a megapod of dolphins located the Condor Express. The dolphins were spread-out over a wide area and took turns riding our waves.

A mother humpback with her calf were spotted near the edge of the lanes. (See note at the end of this report). The 2 became friendly with the boat and made some wonderful close approaches. (See today’s image for an example). Great looks were had by all.

You never know what mother nature has in store.

NOTE: deckhand Isabel never sleeps. Today she identified the mother humpback as being CRC-15559, an unnamed whale. It was first recorded in April 2011 near La Paz, BCS, Mexico, by the Programa de Investigacione Mamiferos Marinos (PRIMMA-UABCS). There are now 31 records of this individual in happywhale.com
