Superb, mirror glass conditions with lots of sharks plus whales and dolphins.

2026 02–27 SB Channel

Maximum wind gusts during 2 trips today were around 2kts. This translated into mostly mirror glass conditions under bright sun with no swell. The morning trip was very productive, and so was the second trip except, our trip search was extensive,  we did not see any whales in the afternoon. My report today is about the morning adventure. Total sightings for the trip: 5 blue sharks (we closely watched 3), 2 gray whales and 75 common dolphins.

We started seeing blue sharks when we were about 6 miles S of the Harbor. They were scattered all over the channel. A few were “cooperative” and stayed on the surface for a while. (see today’s photo for an example).

8 miles out, a single spout led us to the first of 2 individual gray whales. Both were adults and heading northbound. They were very business like and spent a lot of time beneath the surface.

On our way back to the Harbor, 2 miles out, we found about 75 dolphins spread out across a mile or more of ocean. These fun, small citations are always good to see, as they are ever playful and curious about the Condor Express.

You never know what mother nature has in store.
