The Channel midriff produces lots of whales and dolphins.

We worked the mid-Channel region on a day with bright sun and a little wind and chop from the southeast. Totals for the day include: 7+ humpback whales and 2500+ long-beaked common dolphins.

A nice hotspot formed just south of the NOAA buoy and moved in and out of The Lanes. We saw lots of big pods of dolphins as well as a pair of whales. Soon thereafter we found a trio of whales. The whales were feeding sub-surface and had nice intervals to breathe and digest in between forays. Later a single whale was also seen, and the area had more whale spouts in the distance.

On the way home a mega pod of dolphins in a long line led us directly to our 7th whale.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.

PS There is no public whale watch tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 26.
