2018 06-21 SB Channel
It was overcast but glassy offshore today as the Condor Express ran across the Santa Barbara Channel to the giant whale feeding grounds again. Captain Tasha and her crew did not disappoint. Closely watched counts included 8 blue whales, 2 fin whales and 350 long-beaked common dolphins. There were more spouts in the area and the hot spot continues to beckon.
Not far out from Santa Barbara Harbor this morning, and near the Carpinteria oil rigs, a spread out group of a few hundred dolphins located the Condor Express. There was a bit of feeding going on, and soon the main attraction became the boat and its bow, side and stern waves. Great looks were had by all.
South of The Lanes and near the eastern portion of beautiful Santa Cruz Island, the concentration of giants (blue and fin whales) continues unabated. Once on station we were greeted by a single fin and then a second one. Soon we were surrounded by at least 5 blue whales, two of which were regular tail flukers. Finally, a trio of additional blue was closely watched – stupendous sightings, all.
On the way home, the last marine mammal encounter was with 100 additional dolphins.
