Image: a view of a giant blue whale spout being whipped up by a strong wind in the Santa Barbara channel.
2024 06–20 SB Channel
While the trip across The Channel was quite nice… the sun was out and there was blue sky everywhere, by the time we were watching the whales situation had deteriorated. A strong wind came up and the ocean surface became rough. Totals for the day: 2 giant blue whales.
We found the whales in exactly the same location as yesterday. We were in The Lanes adjacent to Anacapa Passage. In fact, one of the whales was the same individual we watched yesterday…the one that had its left tail fluke completely missing. We watched the two whales through four breathing cycles. During that time, they came by the boat and circled us twice. All this was happening, you will recall, with ever increasing winds.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
