Skies were overcast all day until we entered The Harbor on the return trip. There was a very small swell, and the ocean surface was glassy until the afternoon when a 10 knot breeze wafted through. Sightings for the day included: 5000 common dolphins, 13 humpback whales, 1 Minke whale and 100 California sea lions.

Once again, dolphins were around everywhere we went today. Some pods were as large as 1000, others were much smaller, but we really didn’t have any time that we did not see dolphins, once we passed The Farm.

Just before our first mega pot of the dolphins we had a brief look at a Minke whale that surfaced once close to the boat. Some passengers may have missed it. This first pod was the largest of the day and was spread out over a wide area. They came to the boat and “said hello” while riding our bow, side and stern waves. At this same location, there were 4 whales. The first 2 were a pair that included Scarlet, our old pal that we have been watching since 2013. (Since 2013, I have set up a special Scarlet gallery here:

The next whale had a distinctive notch taken out of its tail. We were about a mile north of The Farm when we saw it. Our friend (and drone pilot) Juan identified this animal named “Golem.”

East of The Buoy, we found a large group of 8 more whales. Many dolphins were around them. One of them did a bit of surface sideways lunge feeding.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
