Wonderful humpback whales and their surface activities.

2022 04-24 SB Coast

It was a stellar day in the Channel with outstanding weather and cetacean sightings. A morning and a noon trip left the docks today. Seas were calm, skies were blue, and the water was crystal clear. Totals for the day included: 7 humpback whales, 3500 long-beaked common dolphins and 300 California sea lions.

On the morning run, Captain Dave reported the first interaction with a mega pod of dolphins took place only 4 miles from the harbor. They were spread out over a mile long line and were seen feeding actively along with plenty of seabirds and California sea lions. 4 whales were closely watched.

On the noon excursion we spent a lot of quality time with a mother humpback, her calf and an escort. Mom and calf did a lot of breaching…spectacular! Mom swam around upside down and slapped her long pectoral fins. The tiny calf did a bunch of tail throwing and tried to copy mom’s upside-down antics…showing promise! The area was flooded with a thousand or more dolphins with loads of sea lions and seabirds, similar to the morning trip.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
