2026 07–21 SB Channel
It was a warm, sunny and glassy day in our neck of the Channel. There was also excellent above water visibility making even the smallest canyons in grottos on the islands sharp and clear. Sightings for the day: 2500 common dolphins,
10 humpback whales (we closely watched 5), 200 California sea lions and 1 Ocean sunfish, Mola mola.
There was only 1 productive zone today, but it was a doozy. Captain Eddy and deckhand Cassidy zigzagged around the area going from whale to whale. We suspect that the sub-surface bait balls were either more spread out, and/or deeper, than earlier this week. This is evidenced by the fact that the dives were very long and in random directions. There was a single breach in the distance, though if you weren’t looking at that spot you may have missed it. At one point a medium-sized Ocean sunfish, Mola mola, drifted by and everybody got good looks at it. (See today’s photo for an example).
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
